About This Course
Learners will explore random variables, which assign numerical values to outcomes of random processes. This topic covers discrete and continuous random variables, expected values, and variance.
Learning Outcomes:
The learner should be able to
- Define and differentiates discrete and continuous random variables.
- Understand probability mass functions and density functions.
- Perform different experiments with coins, pair of die and record the outcomes.
- Calculate expected values and variances of random variables.
- Discuss how to compute and tabulate probability distribution corresponding to a given random event and make presentations.
- Describe a discrete random variable and explain the properties of its probability mass function (p.m.f).
- Determine probabilities, measures of central location and dispersion and sketch the p. m. f of a discrete random variable.
- Plot and investigate the probability of these discrete random variables and their cumulative probabilities.
- Describe a continuous random variable and explain the properties of its probability density function (p.d.f).
- Determine probabilities, measures of central location and dispersion and sketch the p.d.f and cumulative distribution function of a continuous random variable.
- Analyse the concepts of a probability density function of a continuous random variable to solve applied problems.
